Feedback

This theme is fairly generic "suspense" music such as might appear in any movie soundtrack. It pops up only a few times. Normally I might have ignored it, but it happens to sound very much to me like the storm music that opens Wagner's Die Walküre. (Notice that it's even in the same key.)

So is this some kind of conscious Wagner reference Shore has inserted into his score? No, I don't think so (though for a serious claim to such a homage, see Into The West). But I have no doubt that Shore knows his Wagner well. Those passages from Wagner live in the heads of all serious movie composers. My guess is that this crypto-quotation emerged from the Shore unconscious out of his mental library of Wagneriana.

On the other hand, perhaps not -- see Shore's Parting Shot.

Occurrences:

Saruman shows Gandalf the palantir.
The hobbits run from the Nazgul in the forest.
Gimli tries to break the ring.
