Feedback

I call this theme "Elves", but it seems in fact to refer only to the elves of Lorien; the elves of Rivendell have their own music. To this theme goes the honor of being the very first sound you hear in the first movie — just before you hear Galadriel say "The world is changed." It is ethereal, otherworldly and a bit eery, just like the elves themselves.

The most interesting aspect of the Elves theme musically is its transformation into a martial form when the elves arrive at Helm's Deep (see below).

This is probably the best place to mention the music that accompanies the first meeting with Galadriel and Celeborn, though the Elves theme is absent. This scene is fraught with tension and expectancy, and one reason is that Shore's music goes utterly static, with chords held motionless in the strings for a seemingly endless time. Shore makes time stand still in this scene, as if waiting (to use Tolkien's words) "for some stroke of doom". It is the only moment like it in the entire score.

Occurrences:

Opening voiceover for Fellowship.
The fellowship arrive in Lorien.
The fellowship are led to Caras Galadon.
Galadriel leads Frodo to the mirror.
Galadriel in the swan boat.
Galadriel's mental message to Elrond in Two Towers.
The elves arrive at Helm's Deep, and we hear the martial version of the theme.
The elves fire a salvo at the Uruks as the latter assault the walls [martial version again].
The elf charge against the Uruks [martial].
Frodo stumbles and falls in Cirith Ungol, and Galadriel appears to him in a vision.
