I would never have noticed this theme exists if Howard Shore hadn't specifically pointed it out in the music documentary that came with the Two Towers Extended Edition. It's a subtle little thing played on a zither, and Shore never calls much attention to it. The idea, of course, is that this theme and the Gollum theme are supposed to represent Gollum's split personality — Sméagol and Gollum. But it doesn't work that way, at least for me, because the two themes are given nothing even approaching equal weight in the score. There are four schizophrenic conversations Gollum has with himself: a short one after he swears to take Frodo and Sam to Mordor; the long one under the tree that ends "Leave now and never come back"; the one in the scraggly woods at the end of Two Towers; and the one with his image in the pool at the start of Return. This motive shows up in all of them except, surprisingly, the longest one. Occurrences:
