Feedback

A mournful, lost, romantic melody that could have been written by Berlioz or Tschaikovsky. It represents the tragedy that is Gollum's life.

An observant reader wrote me to point out that there is a distinct similarity between this theme and the Rivendell theme, in that both begin with an upward arpeggiated figure, one major and one minor. The reader felt there must be a relationship between the two themes (as there is, for instance, with Ring and Barad-Dur), but I cannot think of a reason to relate them, so I am going to call this a happenstance similarity similar to that between Pippin's Song and Gondor.

Occurrences:

Introduction: Gollum hunkered down by the subterranean pool.
Bilbo calls the ring "my precious".
Gandalf describes Gollum's ownership of the ring to Frodo.
Frodo: "No one knows it's here....do they?"
Gandalf describes Gollum's torture in Barad-Dur.
Frodo and Gandalf in Moria: "It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand."
Gollum watches Frodo and Sam unobserved at the beginning of Two Towers.
The taming of Sméagol: "We swears to do what he wants."
Frodo, Sam and Gollum sit disconsolately in the Dead Marshes [fragment].
Frodo goes to Gollum in the Forbidden Pool to save him from Faramir.
Frodo, Sam and Gollum head through the tunnel in Osgiliath [fragment].
Gollum's conversation with his reflection in the water [fragment].
Frodo and Sam leave the Cirith Ungol tower and enter Mordor [variant]. It is interesting that we should hear Gollum's theme at this point; my guess is that it is here to remind us that Gollum has not gone away and is still on their trail.
