Feedback

Shore gives us a few hints of this theme in Fellowship and Towers, but it doesn't come into its own until Return. A regal and rather formal tocsin, unlike the rather earthier and more sensual Rohan theme. One could imagine it being used for a coronation — as indeed it is.

Occurrences:

There is a hint of the theme at the Council of Elrond when Boromir talks of Gondor.
"He is Aragorn, son of Arathorn. You owe him your allegiance."
Elrond says the ring must be destroyed. There is a fragment of the theme in the basses.
After his conversation with Éowyn about his long life (on the way to Helm's Deep), Aragorn is seen sitting deep in thought [solo horn].
The end of Boromir's victory speech to the soldiers in Osgiliath.
Boromir's farewell to Faramir.
The Return of the King title shot.
Saruman taunts Aragorn from the top of Orthanc: "This exile...will never be crowned king." The theme is heard softly, in the low brasses.
Aragorn volunteers to go to Minas Tirith after Pippin's encounter with the palantir [in the background].
Gandalf gallops to Minas Tirith [with Fellowship].
Gandalf's ride through the city; a very grand rendition.
Gandalf tells of the decay of Gondor; "And so the people of Gondor fell into ruin" [softly].
Faramir in Osgiliath; all is quiet as they await the attack [solo horn].
Faramir ambushes the incoming orcs.
The lighting of the signal fires — a very grand statement of the theme.
The fight at Osgiliath.
Faramir arrives at Minas Tirith.
Faramir's suicide company rides out to Osgiliath; a funereal version.
The army of the West leaves Minas Tirith for the Black Gate.
King Elessar is crowned.
